What are the essential things that make a house into a home? There are the fairly basic things within a home that we can’t really live without; things like a bed, an oven, a shower, a washing machine, and so of course; electricity and running water. Remodeling our home is a time for a bit of self indulgence, allowing us to include those items that aren’t quite essential, and yet are things that we want. Home remodeling is expensive, and it’s something most of us have to save for, so it’s time to enjoy the fruits of our labor and go crazy! Although I doubt most of us will go as far as Candy Spelling, the widow of TV producer Aaron Spelling, who reportedly had a room in her Beverly Hills mansion exclusively for wrapping gifts.  Here are some essential (and not so essential) things to think about when remodeling your home…

Go Retro

With the amount of furniture chain stores around, it can be difficult to create a look for your home that feels unique. Some people feel such an aversion to the big chain stores that there’s even a small furniture store in Los Angeles called TINI (This Is Not IKEA). So why not go back to a time before global domination in the furniture department? Go vintage! Shop around the wide array of vintage stores in many towns and cities and you might be surprised by what you find. There are some beautiful retro sofas just waiting for a new home – most of which are in perfect condition.

Breathe Life Into Your Dining Room

There’s a very simple way to change the look of your dining room, and that’s to get a new dining room table. Replace a rectangular table with a circular table or vice versa. You can also place high bar chairs to a counter if you have small room and want to ditch the dining table. If you can’t justify the expense of a new table, then consider advertising on an online forum such as Craigslist for someone who might be open to the idea of a furniture swap. If you get something old, you can still repaint or customize it yourself in some way.

Open Up The Bathroom

The bathroom is sometimes forgotten about when it comes to remodeling your home. It’s often seen as a purely functional room- not one that we need to spend a huge amount of time in. Perhaps we also deliberately forget about it, since remodeling a bathroom can often be a huge expense. For a more inexpensive option, you could simply refinish your bathtub instead of replacing it. When you refinish, you essentially add a chemical compound that is sprayed over the tub, restoring it to its former glory. Anywhere you can fit additional storage space is a great thing, since most bathrooms suffer from excess clutter.

If you want a beautiful bathroom, keep just the elegant essentials out and about; toothbrushes in a stylish holder, shaving stand and mirror, and perfume bottles. Decluttering is the easiest way to turn your bathroom into a stylish addition to your home, rather than a messy embarrassment that you just want to close the door on.
